The Nordic Intellectual Property Law Review is organising a webinar on the topic of Music and Artificial Intelligence

AI-generated music has become a very dynamic field in recent years. This was highlighted by the track Jag vet, du är inte min, which topped Swedish Spotify charts in early 2026 and ignited a lively debate on the roles of human creators and AI tools within the music sector.

At this webinar, Anton Ylikallio (University of Helsinki), Aurelija Lukoševičienė (Lund University), and Måns Svennem Lundberg (Stockholm University) will discuss the relationship between AI, music and copyright, based on Ylikallio’s doctoral dissertation, Musical Works, Copyright, and Generative AI: Legal Perspectives on Originality and Authorship.

The discussion focuses on whether the free and creative choices of the user of an AI system – as reflected in the Court of Justice of the European Union’s standard of originality – are sufficiently expressed in the output to warrant copyright protection. A central challenge lies in determining whether user prompts display the level of specificity required to move beyond an unprotected idea to protected expression. To address this issue, Ylikallio’s research introduces novel analytical methods designed to clarify the boundary between unprotected musical idea blocks and original expression.

The webinar will also address broader legal and policy questions regarding the relationship between copyright and AI, drawing on the speakers' expertise and professional backgrounds in the music sector to examine practical implications for today’s music sector. The webinar will be held in English.
